Position Description
The Department of Chemistry at Columbia University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor position to start July 1, 2025. This tenure-track position is open to all computational and/or theoretical chemists. It will begin with a three-year joint appointment with the Initiative for Computational Catalysis at the Flatiron Institute. The successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated the potential to perform innovative and pioneering research, teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, participate in service to the department, university, and field, and engage in activities that promote our goals and values, including building an equitable and diverse scientific community. Their research program should also align with the goals of the Initiative for Computational Catalysis and of the Flatiron Institute.
The new faculty member will be joining a collegial department at Columbia with a vibrant research enterprise, lively undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, and a strong record in public outreach. Description
The Department of Chemistry at Columbia University invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist who will serve as the manager of its shared biochemical characterization instrumentation facility. The position will begin as early as December 15, 2022, with the possibility of renewal, subject to work eligibility and the usual standards for satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. The facility hosts over 25 biochemical and biophysical instruments. The candidate’s responsibilities include: collaborating with investigators to solve biochemical and biophysical problems, writing grant proposals for new instruments, maintaining and troubleshooting instruments, implementing new technologies, measuring submitted samples, directing user billing, developing training procedures and guides and training students with diverse backgrounds in instrument operation and technique.
Salary range: $85,000-$115,000
Salary commensurate with experience.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics or related field.
Preferred Qualifications: Research emphasis with at least 1-5 years of relevant experience in biophysics or biochemistry using biophysical instrumental methods such as isothermal titration calorimetry, circular dichroism, multi-angle static and dynamic light scattering, as well as single- molecule techniques such as optical tweezer methods and super-resolution microscopy. Post- doctoral experience, in-depth knowledge of instrument operation and maintenance, strong data analysis and interpretation skills, excellent communication skills in oral and written English, interest and ability to write successful grant proposals for new instrumentation, ability to work independently as well as part of a team, excellent people skills to work cohesively with a large user base, flexibility to interact with a diverse group of researchers, and a willingness and ability to train students with diverse backgrounds in biophysical techniques.
