Materials Characterization at High Pressure

Presented by Dr. Mike Ziebel, Roy Group

The design of new materials typically relies on identifying structure-property relationships, often through the synthesis and study of a series of isostructural compounds. However, in many cases, chemical substitution may be impossible or can lead to complex changes to the electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of a material that limit the ability to develop clear design principles for future materials. The study of materials under pressure offers an alternative strategy for directly probing the effects of structural changes on material properties without the need to synthesize new compounds. This talk will discuss recent work investigating changes to the electronic and magnetic properties of materials as a function of pressure, spanning low pressure studies in piston cells to extreme pressure studies in diamond anvil cells. The types of characterization available at different pressure ranges will be discussed, and structural and electronic phase transitions in 2D and 3D materials will be highlighted.
